About

Featuring established poets from across Canada and further diversifying the stage with a cascade of local emerging poets, Tonight it`s Poetry (TIP) is Saskatoon`s only weekly poetry series and performance series of its kind in Saskatchewan.

________

Founded in April 2008, Tonight it's Poetry was spawned to create a premier performance destination for poets in Saskatchewan and poets touring through the prairies. As well, it aimed to create cohesion among emerging poets living in Saskatoon in a site that celebrates poetic and cultural diversity.

In two and a half years, Tonight it's Poetry has hosted nearly fifty established poets and well over a hundred emerging poets. Its initial palm-sized audience grew rapidly and forced the series to move from it's original venue (FLINT, 259 2nd Ave S) to a much larger venue (Lydia's Pub, 650 Broadway Avenue) where they can, and often need to, accomodate 100+ people.

Tonight it's Poetry has graciously received financial support from:

One last hurrah for TiP before the summer puts us to sleep. Magpie Ulysses is featuring this Sunday (the 11th) for a pre-Ness Creek event, and certainly will not invoke drowsy eyes, only desparate cries for MORE MORE MORE!

Magpie and Patrick Swan will be TiP poets of honour at Ness Creek Music Festival and will be seen performing between musical acts and on the workshop stage! Get your Ness passes before they sell out!

Also on the 11th, all 2010 Saskatoon Poetry Slam Team members, minus Megan Lane who is on tour, will also perform this Sunday.

Come down to Lydia's this evening for HAIKU DEATH MATCH II!

A Haiku Death Match is a literary fight to death. Using only haikus that participants themselves have written, they will battle it out to see who will be crowned champion haiku master!

What is a haiku:

A haiku is a poem consisting of three metrical phrases of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. You got that? 1st line-5 syllables, 2nd line-7, and 3rd line-5.

Traditionally, haiku is a Japanese form, most often used to describe nature, but for our purposes it does not matter the theme--they can be funny, sad, sexy, bizarre, it doesn't matter. Also, poets should keep in mind that since the haiku is read aloud, the emphasis will be on the number of syllables (17) not the lines.

haiku example:

the worst time to have
a heart attack is during
a game of charades

How the Death Match works:

Up to 16 poets will sign-up on a first come first serve basis (7pm).

In head to head match-ups, poets will take turns reading their original haikus and the the entire audience will be the judge.

The winners of each match will move onto the next round until two haiku competers remain. In a final round, the two poets will battle for the title of HAIKU MASTER of SASKATOON!

Things Poets Will Need:
1) A total of 12 haiku--three for each round.
2) The fortitude and strength to fight to the death...with their words.
